Crossing 2,700 NM of Atlantic Ocean presents a multitude of challenges, and it goes without saying that preparation and the need to be fully equipped is paramount. The 2021 edition of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) event takes to the waters on the 21st November and takes even the most experienced sailors weeks to complete. It is therefore critical that, on a journey like this, there are means of reliable data transmission onboard every vessel in order to stay connected with fellow cruisers, friends, and family. Below are the satellite communications devices we recommend for an ocean-crossing adventure like the ARC 2021. Rapid Data Send and Retrieval The VesseLink 200 from Thales harnesses the power and reliability of Iridium Certus broadband to deliver upload/download speeds of up to 176 kbps. Make calls, send and receive emails, and download essential weather information. For those taking part in the ARC, it’s...
Guillermo (Willie) and Damian Benegas are twin brothers from Patagonia who run Benegas Brothers Expeditions and take groups on expeditions and adventures all over the world. They were guiding a group on Everest earlier this year when disaster struck. The first earthquake hit Nepal and they quickly set up a rescue project called “Nepal Relief: Building a Path to Recovery”. “Nepal Relief: Building a Path to Recovery”. The project was established to provide aid to remote villages all over Nepal. Through a system of local porters, the project delivered food and supplies to some of the worst affected areas. They needed a reliable form of communication to provide logistical support and chose the Iridium Pilot Satellite Terminal. The terminal also provided a hugely appreciated form of communication for locals who were desperate to hear from loved ones for the first time since the earthquake. The Iridium Equipment Iridium Pilot Land...

After a winter on the ice, Polar Expedition Leader Alex Hibbert gives an honest evaluation of the Iridium equipment which he and his team rely on to communicate in some of the most remote regions of the world. "The internet has been around for a while. We're no longer hearing the circa Year-2000 line of "now we have the web, it's all changed..." As such, the opportunities to communicate to a global audience instantly are hardly breaking news, even for people like me who often work hundreds of miles from the nearest conventional WiFi Hotspot. For a time, this created pressure and even anxiety in the remote travel community. We were being left behind by our limited ability to share stories and photos in real time. On my 2008 Long Haul expedition, I was limited to SMS-length text-only updates and many of these didn't upload properly. Now, 2008 may be...
