Most people rely on mobile phones and smartphones to keep in touch nowadays, but such devices are only useful in the 10% of the world that has mobile phone coverage. Move into the 90% of the world where there is no mobile phone signal and communications become impossible without the right equipment.

The DeLorme inReach is a multiple award winning global satellite messenger designed to offer 2-way messaging for SOS and personal communications, follow-me/find-me tracking and navigation in areas of the world where no other forms of communication exist. inReach can be used literally anywhere on the planet, including oceans, deserts, mountains, Arctic and Antarctic regions. It is lightweight, waterproof, buoyant and impact-resistant and an invaluable travel companion and potential lifeline for outdoors enthusiasts, expeditioners, or anyone working in remote locations. Easy to carry, inReach weighs just 8 oz. including batteries and fits in the palm of your hand.

inReach in Standalone Mode
When used by itself, all inReach functionality is controlled by its pushbutton interface, which is ergonomically designed for one-handed use. There are individual buttons for Power on/off, Tracking, pre-loaded Messaging, and SOS. In addition, there is a sliding button lock to prevent unintentional SOS alerts, and an LED signal light which indicates message status (i.e., sending and delivery confirmed).

Using the inReach setup portal at explore.delorme.com, you can pre-load three customized inReach Messages for anticipated situations (e.g., “Reached the summit”, “Running late but OK”, Car trouble, send AA to my location”). Each inReach Message can be up to 160 characters and transmits to your email recipients the pre-loaded message, your GPS coordinates, speed and even elevation/altitude.

inReach in Paired Mode
When paired wirelessly with popular smartphones or tablets it is capable of sending and receiving customised emails and can be used as a navigation and mapping device, as detailed below:

Messaging
Delorme inReach Satellite Tracker
  • Compose email addresses on the move, or select from your phone contacts
  • Compose and send messages up to 160 characters
  • View incoming messages
  • Post to Facebook, Twitter, or your own shared map

You can compose the longest-available free form messages of up to 160 characters on your companion device’s keyboard. Send status updates and revised arrival times to family, and get the latest news from home. No matter how far you are you travel, the ability to communicate back and forth reduces the distance and provides comforting reassurance.

You can send and receive messages to and from any email address in your inReach address book, and other inReach users. You can also communicate back and forth with anyone following you on MapShare, and you can post messages to Facebook and Twitter.

Interactive SOS
Delorme inReach Satellite Tracker
  • Describe your situation in detail to improve emergency response
  • Stay in touch for mutual status updates on your situation
  • Automatic location tracking

Your pushbutton-activated SOS alert is delivered to the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordinating Center, a 24/7/365 U.S.-based operation with highly-trained staffers who will coordinate with the appropriate response entity for your location and situation.

Follow-me/Find-me tracking and location is automatically activated by any SOS message, so responders can get to you as quickly as possible.

Upon receiving your SOS delivery confirmation, you can send a pushbutton response, which confirms that you are conscious, and still in need of help. If you determine that your situation does not qualify as a true emergency, you can easily cancel your SOS.

DeLorme worked closely with search and rescue (SAR) authorities in developing inReach to ensure multiple false-alarm safeguards, including the button lock, respond-to-SOS, and cancellation features. As a result, when SAR receives an inReach SOS, there is a much higher level of confidence that it is legitimate (as many as 90% of all satellite-delivered SOS alerts turn out to be unintended sends or non-emergencies).

Follow Me/Find Me Tracking & Locating
Delorme inReach Satellite Tracker
  • User-selected tracking interval (10 minutes to 4 hours)
  • GPS position accuracy to within 5 meters
  • View tracking breadcrumbs online
  • Share adventures with family and friends online through MapShare with optional password protection.

Follow-me/Find-me tracking and location allows your family or anyone you designate to follow your travels online via the MapShare web portal. Each track point contains a wealth of information unavailable with other satellite devices, including date, interval, speed, course heading, and elevation/altitude.

A significant inReach advantage is that tracking can be user-configured to display your progress at intervals ranging from 10 minutes to 4 hours. This flexibility allows tracking to be more meaningfully deployed for different modes of travel (e.g., on foot, bicycle, in a boat or vehicle and so on).

When using inReach as a standalone device, tracking is activated from the pushbutton interface. If you haven’t done so, concerned family or designated followers can “ping” your inReach, to remotely activate tracking so they can see your location.

Navigation
  • Navigate using DeLorme's Digital Atlas of the Earth maps
  • Unlike streaming maps, your downloaded maps remain available even when outside of mobile coverage
  • Free Earthmate app for smartphone or tablet users at iTunes or Google Play enables free map downloads

Unlike other satellite devices, inReach fully supports positional awareness and confident GPS navigation. The Earthmate app allows no-charge downloads of the award winning DeLorme topographic maps and NOAA nautical charts to your companion device.

For reliable GPS navigation, the companion device “borrows” the inReach signal, which can be significantly more accurate than the device’s native GPS. It also eliminates GPS-related battery drain on the phone or tablet and turns your device into a state of the art field navigation device

inReach Satellite Subscriptions
DeLorme offers a variety of flexible satellite service subscription plans, beginning at just $9.95 per month for the basic Safety plan. More frequent users can choose between the Recreation and Expedition plans at $24.95 and $49.95 per month, respectively. Four-month Seasonal plans are also available at the Recreation and Expedition levels, at $39.95 and $64.95.

The Safety plan provides 10 messages per month. Tracking is $0.25 per track point. The Recreation level allows 40 Messages per month and the Expedition level, 120 messages per month. Messages include any that are composed and sent using a companion device, and any received on the companion device. There is no charge for Tracking with the Recreation and Expedition plans.

With the Recreation and Expedition plans, any inReach messages — those sent via the inReach pushbutton interface — are free of charge. With the Safety plan, both messages sent and received count toward the 10 message per month allocation.

Although advertised by DeLorme as having SMS capability GTC do not recommend using SMS as a method of communication with the DeLorme inReach. This is because Iridium does not have have agreements in place with all mobile network providers. Therefore SMS sending and receiving can be unreliable. It is better to use email messaging which is far more reliable.
