Inmarsat have launched a unique airtime plan designed to help BGAN users budget for data costs more easily. The BGAN Standard+ Plan charges a basic Monthly Fee of $71.50 which includes 5MB of usage. If you use over 5MB an additional bundle fee will apply which varies depending on how much data is used - the new feature here is that you do not have to decide upfront on how much data you require as with other plans. Inmarsat and Thrane & Thrane have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development and delivery of key components to implement new services on the Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN). The MoU agreement has a total value to Thrane & Thrane of DKK 78 million and will be executed over the next 18-20 months. Inmarsat have announced that the highly anticipated data capability of the IsatPhone Pro will go live on 31st March. Inmarsat have stated that during tests the handset reached speeds of up to 20kbps with plain text emails and said that the service will be ideal for those wanting to access emails, jpegs, documents or PDFs. Thrane & Thrane has signed an agreement to be a key launch manufacturer for Inmarsat's forthcoming Global Xpress service. The new Ka-band satellite Internet service is expected to go live in 2013, offering download speeds of up to 50Mbps. Thrane & Thrane will add the new terminals to its Sailor range for Global Xpress customers in the maritime market. Thrane & Thrane has shipped more than 20,000 Sailor FleetBroadband terminals since the launch of Inmarsat's current flagship service in November 2007. IsatPhone Pro Inmarsat have made the first phone call from their new IsatPhone Pro – a satellite phone which will be launched to coincide with the global expansion of their Inmarsat SPS (Satellite Phone Service) in June 2010. The IsatPhone Pro will improve on the original IsatPhone with new features such as Bluetooth for hands free use and improved battery life. Not only is the launch of the IsatPhone Pro a significant milestone for Inmarsat, it will alter the satellite communications industry as a whole. Currently Iridium is the only provider of global satellite phone services and consequently equipment and airtime is priced higher than other providers such as Thuraya and the current Inmarsat SPS service.
