A Globally Operating Search and Rescue Hub Since 2007, the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Centre (IERCC) has been coordinating rescue operations all over the world. They are a globally positioned organisation, with responders available 24/7 and based in over 200 countries and territories. When an SOS alert comes in, the IERCC team work quickly with local response authorities in order to formulate a rescue mission, and, in 2020, emergency response abilities were bolstered when the GEOS IERCC was acquired by Garmin®. A lot of GTC handheld devices have SOS functionality built-in as standard meaning device carriers can initiate an emergency response if they find themselves in critical danger. At a press of the SOS button, the device transmits a message to GEOS where an alert is then sent to emergency services local to the carrier’s position. The process where an alert is passed from GEOS to response agencies makes...
Iridium has announced the GEOS emergency response service is now available to Iridium Extreme satellite phone customers. At no additional cost to customers, Iridium has integrated the GEOS service into the SOS button on the Iridium Extreme. Launched in September 2011, the Iridium Extreme is the most advanced, rugged satellite phone in the market and is the first to offer an SOS button. As part of the Iridium ForceSM vision for future personal mobile communications, this GEOS service is an enhancement to the phone’s location-awareness services available at launch. This first-ever, integrated satellite phone emergency service sets the standard for providing ultimate peace of mind to lone workers and adventurers alike. A quick press of the SOS button automatically dials the GEOS emergency response center, providing a connection to a live support representative. Where the market used to settle for just one-way SOS alerting, customers now can maintain contact with...
Inmarsat will now offer complimentary access to GEOS' Worldwide Emergency Response Coordination service to all post-paid customers. Pre-pay customers can also access the service by paying an annual fee of $17.95 to GEOS. The service can be accessed by pressing the assistance button on top of the handset. This will then send the user's GPS co-ordinates via satellite to GEOS. The GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) was founded in November 2007 with the culmination of various 24/7 monitoring centers that individually focused on travel safety, security services and monitoring for clients. Staffed, equipped and prepared to respond worldwide with the push of a button, an automatic emergency alert or a simple phone call, the mission of the GEOS IERCC is to aid in the rescue of all savable lives whether at land, air or sea. The center receives the alert and notifies the appropriate authorities to execute the...

Earlier this year it was announced that SPOT satellite trackers will partner with a new emergency response unit, FocusPoint International Emergency Response Center, whose mission is to provide SOS monitoring through committed search and rescue operations. FocusPoint International, with 19 offices on five continents, comfortably relies on their 5,000-strong team of specialist health, security and incident response personnel to attend crisis events around the world, mitigating risk as they do so. The strategic shift sees SPOT move away from their previous global assistance company, GEOS, who were acquired by GPS technology giant, Garmin at the start of 2021. However, because FocusPoint International offers much the same services as GEOS, from a customer point of view, any resulting differences between what the two services offer should be negligible. As part of the basic SPOT subscription, the SOS/911 service will transmit your coordinates to FocusPoint International every 2.5 minutes once the SOS...

Cocojet III. Picture courtesy of Cornell Sailing. A participant in Cornell Sailing's Atlantic Odyssey had to be evacuated from his catamaran on Saturday. Nicolas Hauzy was attempting to fix a fault in the hydraulic steering on Cocojet III when he fell and broke his ankle. The crew of the catamaran immediately initiated the SOS function on their DeLorme inReach provided by Cornell Sailing, the race organisers. Global Telesat Communications supplied inReach Satellite Trackers to the race organisers for last year's inaugural race to allow followers of the rally to keep an eye on race progress. It was hoped that the SOS button on the trackers would never be used. However, in this situation proved to be vital in alerting the organisers of the accident. "Within minutes of the emergency message being received, the Atlantic Odyssey organisers and Cross Gris-Nez, the French Operational Rescue Center coordinating SAR operations, were in touch...
