A Word on the Best Satellite Phones So many of us love nothing more than stuffing a bag full of essentials and driving off into the wilderness, or heading off solo or with friends for a backpacking adventure. Depending how far off-grid you go, you will need a reliable satellite connectivity source should something go wrong. A readily-accessible satellite phone with decent coverage for voice calls, and one that doesn’t break the bank, should be part of that essential packing. Buyer's Guide To Satellite Phones It goes without saying that all satellite phones have their differences, which is why we have put this handy guide together. For example, Iridium satellite phones rely on their mesh network of 66 Low-Earth-Orbiting (LEO) satellites to deliver global coverage from pole-to-pole, while others depend on fewer geostationary satellites that sit 30,000 miles above the equator, reaching over 90% of the globe but not quite...

IsatPhone Pro Inmarsat have made the first phone call from their new IsatPhone Pro – a satellite phone which will be launched to coincide with the global expansion of their Inmarsat SPS (Satellite Phone Service) in June 2010. The IsatPhone Pro will improve on the original IsatPhone with new features such as Bluetooth for hands free use and improved battery life. Not only is the launch of the IsatPhone Pro a significant milestone for Inmarsat, it will alter the satellite communications industry as a whole. Currently Iridium is the only provider of global satellite phone services and consequently equipment and airtime is priced higher than other providers such as Thuraya and the current Inmarsat SPS service. It will be interesting to see how this increased competition in global satellite voice services will affect prices – it could be that increased competition leads to a fall in prices making satellite communications...
Team Rubicon unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams in the UK and around the world. This work involves traveling to remote areas. Therefore, traditional communication infrastructure does not exist. Additionally, disaster stricken areas' communications infrastructure is destroyed. We caught up with Team Rubicon’s Tech & Innovation Manager, Chris Lyon to see how the equipment provided by GTC supports the work they do. Team Rubicon On 25th April 2015, an earthquake measuring 7.8 hit the Kathmandu area in Nepal. General Sir Nick Parker, Former Commander of British Land Forces and Team Rubicon Global Board Member, put out a call to action asking UK veterans to volunteer their time and skills to provide aid in Nepal. He quickly pulled together an impressive team (including a large proportion of Ghurkas). Each member was capable of providing medical aid, search and rescue support....

A change in EU regulations in July this year means all fishing vessels of more than 24 metres in length are now required to record and transmit daily activity reports of catch, transshipments, landings and sales electronically to fishing authorities. This requires a communication system which is reliable, easy to use and install but most of all cost-effective. Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband 150 terminal ticks all these boxes with simultaneous voice and data capabilities with data transmission achieving rates of up to 150 kbps. The terminal can also send and receive SMS and provides global coverage excluding the poles. An important feature to mention is that the Inmarsat network is not affected by weather making it a reliable choice for fishing vessels. The antenna is contained in a 29cm diameter radome which weighs between only 2 kg so finding a spot for it on your vessel couldn’t be easier. The FleetBroadband 150...
Unveiling the Iridium Network The Iridium satellite network is a sophisticated constellation comprising 66 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites meticulously positioned to ensure comprehensive global coverage. Unlike traditional geostationary satellites, which orbit much higher above the Earth, Iridium's LEO architecture allows for lower latency communication, crucial for real-time voice and data transmission. One of its standout features is its cross-linking technology, where each satellite is equipped with inter-satellite links enabling direct communication with neighbouring satellites. This innovative setup enables seamless handoffs of signals across the network, guaranteeing uninterrupted coverage even as satellites traverse the sky. The network caters to a diverse array of users, including government agencies, maritime and aviation industries, emergency responders, remote field workers, and individuals in areas lacking terrestrial communication infrastructure. Its services encompass voice calls, text messaging, internet access, and asset tracking, catering to a broad spectrum of communication needs. Beyond its primary function, the network...
As we enter summer people start to enjoy the weather and get out and about by climbing, sailing, mountaineering and fishing more often. However, many of these activities can mean venturing into the unknown where there is no mobile phone coverage and in case of emergency it is essential that adventurers have means of communication. This is where a satellite phone would come in handy but if you only need it for a couple of months a year is it worth the investment? With sat phones ranging from £420 - £999 plus airtime charges it may be that satellite phone rental is a more viable option. Starting from just £140 a month sat phone rental allows you to stay in touch without the investment a sat phone purchase brings. For coverage in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Far East and Australia consider Thuraya or Iridium. However, if you need...
