New Iridium Pilot Raises the Bar for Affordable Broadband Maritime Communications

Iridium Communications Inc. announces the launch of its second-generation maritime broadband platform, Iridium Pilot. Iridium Pilot will utilize the Iridium OpenPort service – the world’s first when it comes to fully global maritime broadband.

Iridium Pilot is engineered for enhanced durability to withstand the harshest maritime conditions, all the while packaged in a small, lightweight antenna. It has a fixed, electronically-steerable, phased-array antenna, designed to maintain connectivity in rough seas. Iridium Pilot offers broadband connectivity in addition to three independent phone lines, all of which work simultaneously, with data speeds up to 134 kbps. The platform offers a suite of new capabilities for vessel telecommunications optimization. These capabilities include a built-in firewall for traffic management and a bulk configuration capability to assist in efficiently managing large volumes of units. Its small form factor, enhanced capabilities and flexible service packages make Iridium Pilot an optimal solution for vessels large and small. In addition, Iridium Pilot maintains the best service program in the industry, the Iridium Global Service Program, and the industry’s only standard five-year limited warranty.

The new Iridium Pilot works through the global Iridium OpenPort system

“We currently see a rapid migration from legacy narrowband services to new generation broadband solutions in the maritime satellite communications market,” said Richard Roithner, Senior Consultant at Euroconsult. “MSS broadband solutions, in particular those positioned in the lower price ranges, have seen significant growth over the last two years increasing at around 120 percent per year. Euroconsult projects growth to continue in the coming years as these systems provide an attractive value proposition for low- and medium-end markets, including fishing, shipping and leisure vessels, to provide safety communications, enhance ship operations, improve crew welfare as well as provide complementary services for VSAT. Our research has found that data rates of around 128kbps are sufficient for the majority of applications used onboard vessels today.”

Iridium Pilot is the latest example of Iridium’s long-term commitment to investment and innovation focused on satisfying communications needs around the globe. The company’s goal is to continually improve the customer experience in new and existing markets in the farthest reaches of the world now and into the future.

“Importantly, Iridium Pilot will be compatible with Iridium’s next generation satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT,” said Joel Thompson, vice president, product management, Iridium. “Iridium NEXT, scheduled for deployment starting in 2015, is the largest commercial space program underway today. Ship operators installing Iridium Pilot can have the confidence that their equipment will be supported well beyond 2020.”

Top ten questions asked before buying a satellite phone

Here at Global Telesat Communications we have helped many customers who are new to satellite phones and want to know all the facts before making their purchase.  Here we have listed the most frequently asked questions and more importantly the answers!

1. Which satellite phone is best for me?

Network coverage is important when deciding which sat phone is best for you

Firstly you need to check the network coverage maps to find out which networks cover the areas you are travelling to.

Secondly you need to compare the features of each handset.  This can be done easily with our sat phone comparison guide.

2. Are you charged for receiving calls on a sat phone?

No, you are not charged for receiving calls or text messages on the sat phone.

3. How much does it cost to call a satellite phone?

Charges for calling a satellite phone do vary greatly depending on what type of phone you are calling from and who the operator is.  As some providers can charge up to £5 per minute to call a satellite phone we recommend that where possible the sat phone user makes the calls as it almost always works out cheaper than calling to the sat phone.

IsatPhone Pro users may want to consider informing colleagues, friends and family that you can call the Inmarsat network from Skype: Read our article “Did you know you can use Skype to call Inmarsat phones and terminals?”

Iridium users may want to consider informing colleagues, friends and family of the 2 stage dialling option.  This involves the caller ringing a US number (charged at their usual international rates).  However, it does mean that the Iridium user will incur a charge.  Further information is available at our website.

4. How do I top-up my satellite phone?

You can top-up your satellite phone SIM card by purchasing online at www.globaltelesat.co.uk or by calling us on +44 1202 607486.  In most cases if you originally bought your SIM card from us we can top-up your SIM card remotely and within one hour of the top-up request.

5. How will I activate the phone SIM card?

At the time of purchase you can either give us a specified date that you want us to activate the SIM card for you or you can let us know by sending an email or phoning us nearer the time.  The activation is done remotely by us and once completed you can simply pop the SIM card in the sat phone and away you go!

6. How do I check the balance of my satellite phone?

You can easily keep an eye on your SIM balance with the IsatPhone Pro

You can check the balance of your SIM card from the handset itself.

Iridium - Dial 2888 from the sat phone.

Thuraya – Dial 151 from the sat phone.

Inmarsat – Select Menu > Settings > Prepay>Balance enquiry from the sat phone.

7. Do your satellite phones come with a warranty?

All satellite phones supplied by GTC come with a one year manufacturer’s warranty.

8. Can I use a satellite phone for sending emails?

Satellite phones do have a data capability but in all honesty it isn’t particularly quick and only suited for sending and receiving short plain text emails.  For larger emails and data transfer consider a portable satellite terminal.

All satellite phones have the ability to send and receive short messages to and from an email address directly from the handset using the SMS editor.  Sending via this method will be charged at the usual text rate, receiving is free of charge.

9. How quickly can you deliver my sat phone?

We hold most handsets in stock and offer next day delivery within the UK and most of Europe.  International shipments are usually delivered within 5 business days.  If you have urgent delivery requirements please call us on +44 1202 607486 to discuss.

10. Can you do me a deal?!

We have some offers available on our website which are great for new customers: http://www.globaltelesat.co.uk/satphone/GTC-Offers.html

Globalstar Customers Reaping Benefits of New Second-Generation Satellites

Globalstar GSP-1700 Satellite Phone

Globalstar GSP-1700 Satellite Phone

Globalstar, Inc., today announced its commercial and recreational customers are experiencing significant improvements in Globalstar’s satellite telephone service. The enhancements to Globalstar‘s service is the result of the company’s recently deployed second-generation satellites, designed to support its current voice, Duplex and Simplex data products and services including its SPOT brand of retail consumer products.

On December 28, 2011, the company successfully completed its third launch of six second-generation satellites from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Globalstar expects to announce an update regarding the timing of its fourth launch in the next few weeks. Globalstar is on track to be the first Mobile Satellite Services provider to launch, deploy and utilize a second-generation constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites to service new and existing customers around the world.

“We are pleased to announce the return of our fast, high-quality mobile satellite voice and data solutions,” said Jay Monroe, chief executive officer, Globalstar Inc. “Each successful launch and deployment of these new satellites has progressively increased performance. We expect continued performance improvements over the coming months and throughout 2012 as additional satellites become operational.”

“Globalstar offers tremendous value providing unmatched call clarity in a portable, satellite-based communications solution when working or traveling in remote areas,” said Tim Hoerner, president of Digicom Global Inc., a leading satellite communications distributor and Globalstar authorized agent. “Our customers are currently enjoying improved call reliability that we expect will keep improving as more satellites are placed into service later this year.”

Globalstar aims to provide the world’s highest quality mobile satellite voice and fastest mobile satellite handset data services available to customers in more than 120 countries. The second-generation satellites are designed to have a 15 year life-span giving Globalstar and its dealer network an advantage over other MSS providers.

Globalstar’s Qualcomm manufactured GSP-1700 is one of the smallest and lightest commercial mobile satellite handsets available and it provides customers with superior, crystal clear CDMA voice quality. Additionally, Globalstar offers the industry’s fastest mobile satellite handset data speeds with localized telephone numbers (where available). Combined with a price of just £300 GBP ex VAT, the GSP-1700 offers the highest value proposition for those customers who demand superior performance in remote northern areas such as northern Canada and parts of Alaska.

Globalstar customers can enjoy airtime plans starting from just €10.00 per month. For complete details and visit http://www.globaltelesat.co.uk/satphone/Globalstar_Satellite_Phone_Airtime.html
